Since you are thinking of stripping it down anyway, I'd try an overcoat of semi gloss or gloss clear over the stripes and see how that changes the tone. The only way I've gotten yellow to work is to put it on in several very very thin coats. You could try very fine sanding of the line where the yellow meets the alclad, since you you will be putting black stripes there anyway?

So whats the best course of action then since its already painted, strip it down? The alclad ripping up with tape is most likely becuase I was impatient, I'm more worried about the yellow stripe.

I have had problems with tape pulling up the Alclad, and I don't like the effect the glosscoat gives.  So I always do any color stuff before I do the Alclad. I do the lighter colors even before the black undercoat, then mask.  I often do dark colors on top of the black, then mask those off.  The Alclad operation is then the last painting.

Also, another option is to make homemade inkjet decals for color stripes.  I have done this at times when a painted stripe is too much work.

Alclad is less likely to come up from tape pulls if you clear coat if before applying tape. Nonetheless, it goes on so thin that respraying pulled up areas is pretty painless. (Looks a lot worse than it really is).

Squatch, here's an example of Model Master Insignia Yellow enamel applied over SnJ aluminum.  Old SnJ was pretty tough stuff and I never had any lift with masking tape.  The black edges on the yellow were decals.  Good luck with your build!

HAHA Bick your posts are always welcome. Fixing where the alclad lifted should be easy enough, a pain in the butt for sure, but not hard. I'm starting to wonder if a closs coat over the whole plane would make the yellow bands look better...

Hi Squatch88,

Wish I could help but? I'll be following to see what others say. Alclad(s) have been difficult for me mostly. As far as the yellow band is concerned I think lacquer would work (duplicolor car paints if you can find a match) or I used "Plaid" brand yellow for plastic when I built my F86 and was able to match color 'reasonably' well (pics somewhere here) without too many coats. Have no idea how to fix where the Alclad lifted. And, as I proof read this wonder if I should even Post. Anyway-----

Alcad failure...

F-86F Sabre in the works. Wanting to do one with the yellow bands. I put the alclad down no problem, over a glass black acrylic primer coat. Kit didn't have any decal for the yellow wing markings and I didn't want there to be a color difference between the tips and the band around the  fuselage. So I opted to mask and paint it all. Here is where the failure comes into play...the yellow acrylic paint that I used (Model Master Acrylic) went down fine, but there were 2 problems. 1) paint is visibly thick on the model compared to the alclad. 2) the yellow paint just looks dull and very model like. Is there a paint or method I can use to get the more painted on look? Should I get some enamel paint or even some lacquer paint in the yellow?

Also some alclad ripped up with the tape. Whats the best way to get it back to snuff? I think I will have to sand down or use paint remover to get the yellow band off.
