The packing nut is a very sensitive adjustment.  It should be barely tightened so that there is a slight drag on the needle.  If you force the needle forward because of a tight adjustment, you could split the nozzle.  The packing nut has been modified, but it should still work the same.

Does anyone know if Paasche has changed the design of the VL? I replaced the packing nut and washer in a 25 year old design and now the needle cannot adjust the paint freely. I think the needle is damaged from installing it back in the brush as well.
