Thank for responses,

I used Goo Gone very gently with  a q- tip,  it did start to remove the paint a little but I caught it before I went further.....it reduced but did not remove the residue.   I then decal-ed and then sprayed with MM gloss laquer from rattle can.  It worked ,you can no longer see the residue lines.

So problem solved.  I usually use Tamiya yellow masking tape but needed it in 1/16 which I only had on hand in the Pactra....it may have been old as well causing the problem in the first place.

Do not use WD-40 unless you know for sure that you are all done painting.  WD-40 contains silicone, and silicone is extremely hard to clean off the surface, and if you don't get every bit off, it may screw up paint adhesion of any paint put down over it.

Good advice from Don!Yes

I'm not sure what would happen but as I understand it most adhesives are animal fat based.  You can use wd-40 to break down the adhesive.  Again, I don't know what would happen to a model but I've used it to remove the adhesive from old vinyl lettering and stripes on car paint exteriors.  Real world cars not scale.

I used to print labels and we would use wd-40 to remove the sample labels off product samples to return to the client.  That stuff is meant to stay.

I've had good results with "Goo Gone" in situations such as this.  I don't think I'd use "Goof Off" though, it's much too hot for this.Smile

try rolling blue/white/poster tac over it,  rolling, not dabbing, as this is less harmful, then washing gently with dish soap/Washing-up liquid.

Removing masking tape residue from Tamiya Gloss acrylic?
Posted by Wilbur Wright on Wednesday, January 21, 2015 10:36 PM

Hi Guys,

I have an F1 model I Sprayed several coats of Tamiya x-5 green on. It cured for about a week then I used Pactra model masking tape (The light green tape) to paint yellow line details.  The paint job came out great but there is some tape residue on the green. Never had this happen before

I tried gently using a q-tip with orderless min spirits....did not work.

What can I use as to not affect the Tamiya green paint?  Any ideas?  Would "Goof off"  be too strong for the Tamiya Acrylic?

I do plan to gloss coat the whole model when decal-ed.

Thanks
