Dry brushing a darker color over a light brown or tan base also works.

Stikpusher is correct. I've many photos where the pioneer tools were installed before painting,so every thing was od green,or whatever color.that said wood color varies, be it oak ,ash  or whatever

US Army Pioneer tools, the stuff on military vehicles is usually seen one of two ways. They could be painted overall OD, or they could be like you would find at the local Sears with the handles in varnished wood and the metal parts bare steel or painted a common color such as black. I like using Tamiya Deck Tan and give it a wash of Raw Umber for a good weathered look. The bare metal oxidizes with age and use. Tamiya Flat Brown mixed with their Gun Metal is a good way to approach that look.

I use Vallejo Natural Wood,and then use a brown wash,I also hit it with some dark pigments till I get the look I like.
