Can anyone tell me what happened?

Greetings,

Someting happened that has me puzzled. I am building a Corsair and wanted to experiment with the "salt" method of reproducing paint chips. Mind you, I did the exact same thing on three drop tanks and it turned out great.

Last night I sprayed my top coat on the flaps. I am using Testors acryllics as the final paint coat. Washed the parts then sprayed them with Testors aluminum thinned with laquer. Let it dry then sprayed Polys acrylic gloss coat over the aluminum. Placed my salt chips on with a little water then let dry. Sprayed the final dark blue using Testors acrylics with about 15/20 lbs of pressure. You can't use too much air because it blows the salt chips off. I sprayed the final coat using thin coats to build the color. A little while after I was done I checked the pieces and had tiny little lines that appeared to be cracks in the final top coat. Best as I can say is that the paint had an orange peel effect. Does anyone have any idea what could have gone wrong? I know what orange peel is and very seldom have a problem with it. What has me puzzled is that I used the exact same procedure on three drop tanks and they turned out great.

I would sure appreciate any ideas on what could have gone wrong. BTW, I thinned my dark blue acrylic with a llittle Golden airbrush medium. This has really worked well for me in the past. Well, thanks to brake fluid I have now cleaned all the paint off and I can start over.

Thanks to all in advance.

I want to say that it sound more like paint seperation, like 'fish-eyes'....perhaps there was some oil or something left on the model when you went to paint.....did it happen everywhere?? Or did it only happen around the salt?? And did it happen around every piece of salt?

Just a wild guess, but are the lines only in the vicinity of the salt? If so perhaps it's a reaction of the salt with the acrylic.

I don't thnk that the salt had anything to do with what happened. The flaps on the Corsair consist of six individual pieces. Each piece was effected where I sprayed the dark blue. What happend to the finish coat looked like a bunch of small wavy, irregular craks that let the aluminum base coat show through. At first I thought that dust or lint had settled on the peices but a closer look revealed the cracks with the overall appearance looking like orange peel. I did the exact same process on some drop tanks and they turned out fantastic.

Does anyone think that the order and types of paint could be the problem?

Aluminum enamel thinned with laquer thinner then
Poly S gloss coat then
Testors acrylic thinned with Golden airbrush medium

Thinking abut it further, the only difference was that the flaps were shot with a new bottle of Testors acrylic. The drop tanks were shot with another bottle that got used up.

Thanks again,

Chuck
