Nathan & Jay: Thank you both for the help and advice. I bought a Badger Patriot and replaced my Husky shop compressor with a new Sparmax tabletop. MUCH nicer. Bought a large tablet of news print and a child's coloring book and am getting some hours in becoming comfortable with the new AB. Purchased some sheets of styrene at my LHS. Thought was to prime them and practice camo work, Will now also try the exhaust techniques you suggest. We will all get the see the results on my 109! Yes Thanks!!

Totally agree, Nathan. Bob, I will run down my technique, which I got from David Parker, editor of Air Modeler magazine and a fantastic modeler. Get some Gouache water colors, available at any art supply store. Mix up some brown and black together until you get the shade you want. It takes some playing around with the mix to get it right. Spray at very low pressure, as in <5 psi. If it beads up like water the mix is too thin or the pressure is too high or both. It needs to to built up in very thin layers. There are a couple of reasons I like this method the best. For one it looks very realistic. Dries to a perfectly flat finish just like a real exhaust stain. The best thing though is that if you screw it up, or just aren't quite happy with it, just wipe it off with a wet q-tip or rag and try again. No pressure to be perfect the first time. It takes some practice to get it right, but it's worth it IMHO. You can PM me if you have any questions.

Yes, I echo Jay. Use your airbrush for exhaust stains. Maybe pastels...but only if you don't have an airbrush

Bob, that sounds fine, although personally I only use raw umber, but oil washes are not what you want to use for exhaust stains.

I'd add raw umber and a gray to your color list.

Before running hip to HobbyLobby I thought I would run my shopping list by. I'm thinking of buying one tube each WN oils, black and burnt umber, odorless turpentine and a WN 000 brush. Getting ready to weather 109, North Africa RLM 79 & 78. I understand the ratio to be 1:20, although I'm sure there is a heavy use of the SWAG method in getting that ratio. Should I use more burnt umber than black for desert wash and mix another batch for exhaust? Thanks! Bob
