Steve - What is the make and model of your airbrush? Paasche, Badger or other? Some have a clear means of identifying the needle and head sizes by markings on the parts, some are not quite so clear.

Example: Some may have grooves at the back ends of the needles, 1=small, 2=medium, 3=large, not all cones are marked, some will have F,M or L engraved to identify. In time as you get really familiar, you should be able to visually determine what the parts are, it's subtle, but apparent by the relative sizes.

But for sure you don't want to assemble incorrectly, needle or cone damage will make the parts worthless. If you want, list make and model and I'll try to help you with correctly identifying parts for assembly. Happy painting.

Steve - In all of my airbrushes, the needle bearing has a given inside diameter. Hence all of the needles have the same size, except at the very tip.

As the size of the hole in the tip/cone/head combinations vary from smaller to larger, (smaller = less paint flow, larger hole = more,) then the needle tip will be correspondingly shaped/sized to accurately fit the shape of the head combination. That fit must be precise, to allow an accurate adjustment for more, or less, paint flow when pressing the trigger.

When the needle is fully forward the seal is complete, there should be no paint flow when using the trigger trying to spray. As the needle moves backward and opens the hole a bit, then the paint will flow.

Have you looked at "Don's airbrush website" yet? About anything you might need to know about all things airbrush you will find  there. Just Google it, very well worth the time.

P.S. This wasn't an April fool joke question, was it???????

Er... No... probably, Huh?

but the smaller the number then the finer (& more finnicky!) the spray, therefore in the example below, the finer the needle, the LESS paint comes out.

I have an Iwata CS with a 0.35 and 0.5 headsets, & the needles are the same diameter in order to fit the airbrush.

It might be (more) accurate to talk about the headset/nozzle size (in Iwata-speak).

The needle, nozzle, & nozzle cap need to be matched, the two sets I have, 0.35 & 0.5  are not the same, have different geometry, & are not interchangeable.  (head cap & airbrush body the same).
