Funny happening with alclad!
Posted by Don Stauffer on Sunday, April 19, 2015 11:10 AM

I just finished doing the Alclad on my 1:48 Twin Beech, and began removing the masking tape from the cabin windows and windscreen.  I found the Alclad does not stick very well to the masking tape, and when I went to dig off the tape from the windows the Alclad itself pops off of the tape. I have several chips now of Alclad, just like they are pieces of aluminum.  They are quite stiff.  So it is pop off the Alclad, then pull off the tape!  Weird!

Primer?

What kind of tape?

Why it's not good to mask over Alclad either.

Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

Did you prime?  Priming is needed for Alclad.

I had the same situation once, airbrushing lacquer paint. When I finished I gave the paint one full day to dry, then when pulling the tape the paint stayed firmly attached to the finish, but paint slid right off the tape.

Now when using any lacquer like Alclad, I just wait for a few minutes then pull the tape. In the case of the paint not sticking on the tape, I used the blue polyurethane type. By not waiting long now, the paint seems still soft enough to remain adhered to the tape. No problems since

Yes, I had several coats of Alclad primer.  This tape was NOT over the Alclad, it was under the alclad.  The alclad was the last coat.  I waited several hours before pulling tape to eliminate fingerprints in the Alclad, but did get a few anyway, so I should have waited longer.
