Opposite to Pledge, anyone?
Posted by pianodog on Wednesday, April 29, 2015 8:20 AM

Hello everyone,

Any one knows a good flat base finish for airbrush to be use with Mr. Color or Tamiya (sometimes). As always your tips will be appreciated.

I assume you are asking for a matte varnish.  I've used Tamiya XF-86 flat clear, W&N flat clear & Vallejo flat clear.  I prefer Tamiya and W&N to Vallejo.  Vallejo doesn't spray well.

Pledge/Future/Kleer/etc cut with small amounts of Tamiya X21 Flat Base, will turn it mat or semi, depending on mix.

X21 is an opaque past you add to gloss to get it to mat/semi-mat down.

You don't need 10% to get it mat though, I mix up a batch in a 35mm film canister, test spray, & adjust +/- if needed.

I have used it with Original Kleer, but not the newer ones, so test first!

There are cans of acrylic clear flat at hardware stores. It is pretty thick- needs to be thinned a LOT.

Why not Mr. Color clear flat? That's what I use.
