I have seen several demonstrations of using black as a primer on the hull only.  The effect was impressive and I plan on trying it on my next ship.  It seem to make all the features molded on the hull standout better and the final grey and hull red colors seem richer.

Priming and/or preshading superstructure

Hello all,

I'm a fairly experienced armor modeler and am familiar with techniques such as priming in dark colors, pre-shading, and post-shading.  I've seen many pics online of amazing looking WW2 era ships whose superstructures seem to have been painted using some of those methods.  I'm working on a 1/350 Bismarck and am considering priming the entire superstructure in black or a very dark gray before applying the final colors to break up the monotone color and to create a shadow effect in the nooks, underhangs, etc.

Do any of you have any experience with preshading ship models?  Will a black or dark gray create a realistic effect without committing overkill?  I suppose it's fairly low risk as I can just paint over everything but I'm hoping to avoid layering on more paint than is really necessary.

Thanks for any comments.
