Iwata HP C Plus - Quality control issues?
Posted by dr4 on Sunday, July 5, 2015 6:00 PM

Hello all on this forum.

I am just making this post for anyone with or thinking of getting an Iwata HP C plus airbrush.

I love this airbrush but ...       when I got this AB I stripped it down cleaned it and lubed it ready for use.

Very happy with the quality in general but the trigger movement was rough, very poor for an airbrush of this supposed quality. I have a premiair g35 which has a vastly smoother feel to the trigger action.

I stripped it back down as it was bugging me a bit and closely inspected both the needle chuck and the barrel it sits in. Actually what I did was remove each peice one bit at a time until the rough feeling in pulling back the trigger went. From that it seemed to be coming from the needle chucks action.

Sure enough looking with a light shining through the barrel and a jewelers loop I could see small burrs or machinig defects inside the barrel. I cleaned and checked the pin that slides inside this barrel and again with good light and a loop there was evidence of scoring happening on the pin.

I have emailed the sellers and am waiting there response.I have improved the action by taking 2000 wet and dry to the inside of the barrel and the pin. I may repeat this and try lubing this area with some white lithium grease to get an improved action.

You really should not be having to fix a brand new airbrush. Anyway just thought I would let other people know of this issue if you have a rough trigger action there may actually be a reason for it.

Regards Doug

I would contact Devin Ross, Iwata Medea Customer Service at devinr@iwata-medea.com.  This is not typical of Iwata products.

It's an aberration. Did you buy from a reputable Iwata dealer? Anyway, contact Iwata CS and they'll take care of it.

Yes the company have offered to replace the airbrush but being bought straight from Japan I don't really want to send it back. They also said I could get in touch with Iwata UK which I have done.

What I would like is just a new needle chuck piece but I don't think they will do that

Yes I am surprised, the airbrush is genuine Iwata, I have had them before. I thought maybe this could be a second or something. The quality is very good otherwise. I have inspected all components very carefully and am impressed with the quality of the needle spraying action and design.

I have for all purposes sort of solved this problem myself but the action still is not as smooth as my other brush. I would suggest for others just to return the brush and get another, I'm sure Iwata would honour this as it is a manufacturing defect.

I however have started fiddling with it now so don't feel right about sending it back and as I said it's working now ok, just not 100% maybe.

I imagine a chuck barrel and pin would be costly to buy on it's own, also these two components seem to be what gives the AB it's trigger feel. The other airbrush I have has defects inside this cylinder also just they are not causing any roughness or scoring.

Thing is I have heard reviews of other brushes having a better trigger action, if I were totally new to airbrushes and had nothing to directly compare maybe I would have accepted this and thought  no more about it. I don't have an identical brush so I'm not sure if my brush is as good as they should be now or not.

I am tempted to use a jewelers file to remove all evidence of burrs on the cylinder and the pin then polish both surfaces and see if there is further improvement.

Anyway just letting people know it's worth checking out the trigger action on any prospective airbrush because some are flawless and when you have enjoyed flawless it's hard to go back to just ok.

Doug.
