Krylon or similar type products in this case "Gloss Clear Coat"
Posted by Toshi on Sunday, July 5, 2015 8:02 PM

To my fellow forum members,

It's as simple as this; is it safe to use Krylon or similar type products?  I'm considering purchasing a can of clear gloss and flat clear finish.

Examples are as follows:

1) To seal acrylic paints?  Clear Gloss or Flat Finish Krylon or similar products.

2) To seal enamel paints?

3) To spray a clear gloss prior to attaching decals?

4) To spray a final flat coat or even a gloss coat to seal decals and to complete a model kit?

Your assistance would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you in advance.

I use Krylon clear occasionally. It is safe, but the problem is the Krylon nozzles put down a pretty heavy coat compared to the fine nozzles with model spray paint cans, like Testors or Tamiya. If you want a really heavy clear coat Krylon is okay.  It works on enamels as well as acrylics.

I would not use it for prep for decals- the coat is just too thick and the decals would tend to look like they are floating.

To Don Stauffer,

Thank you sir, I'm off to Walmart to purchase a clear flat and gloss.  Thank you for taking the time out to read my questions and replying with an answer so quickly.

@Toshi,

Do you have an airbrush?  Then, you'd be better off with Tamiya Clear, Future or W&N clear.  I use and am happy with all of them.

To chris-k,

Yes, I have a Harbor Freight Tools siphon AB and a NEO Iwata.  I'll definitely look into to this.  Thank you for the read and reply.

I use Rustoleum clearcoat in rattle can. Personally, I'm not crazy about Krylon brand spray paints.

Then, go to a local art store and grab a Winsor & Newton acrylic varnish.  It cleans with water and doesn't need thinning.  I spray clear acrylics at 20-30 psi.

To 214,

So Rustoleum, I'm very familiar with that brand.  That's great to know.  Once again, thank you for your time 214!

Got it, I normally hit Hobby Lobby and Michaels here in North East Ohio.  20 to 30 PSI, no problem.  Why do you have all the links to Iwata's high end brand AB?  I'm a dedicated fan of Iwata.  Some day soon, I want a Custom Micron, Eclipse, NEO Pistol Grip, and a heavy duty Iwata Compressor.

Is Sparmax an affiliate of Iwata?  I'm only asking you this due to the fact that you have these Iwata links and most importantly, your experience and knowledge in AB.  Thank you in advance sir.

Chris-k, that Windsor & Newton sounds very interesting. I'd love to use an acrylic varnish. I never quite got the hang of spraying Future, but I was using a very cheap siphon-feed and I think I may not have been taking that into account. Do you cut your Future with anything?

Sorry Toshi, don't mean to hijack your thread

I wouldn't suggest Krylon. From experience, it goes on way too thick and that leads to runs.

I've always had great results with Testors if you are using spray cans.

Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

To Jetmaker,

No problem, please don't apologize, you did not hijack any thread.  We are all here to enjoy one another's company, have fun, and learn from each other.  My friend, it's all good between you and I.  I too am considering the acrylic varnish.  I'm glad we can both draw on Chris-k's knowledge and experience.

To Gmorrison,

Sir, how are you doing?  Did you enjoy your holiday weekend?  I really, really miss you on my threads.  I'm so glad to hear from you.  I hope it wasn't something I said or done to you?  I have the upmost respect for you sir.

As for the rattle can issue and what brand/type to use, I've always stuck with Testors rattle cans exclusively.  I just wanted to know if other brands and or types was safe to utilize.  You know how I am, a novice, willing to try anything and everything just like a three year old kid!  LOL!

Sir, thank you so much for returning a suggestion on this thread, your information is of great value to me.  Take care and I hope to hear from you very soon.  Thanks Gmorrison.

To Gmorrison,

I forgot to add that another reason I purchased a few Krylon products is the fact that they were on sale at Walmart as a price reduction product.  It cost $3.89 per a 12oz. can.

On the flat paint. I don't know what degree of flat you want but nothing I've seen, including Krylon, beats Testors Dull coat for a dead flat finish.

If I'm ever in Hobby Lobby and can't find anything to use their 40% coupon on I always pick up a can of the Testors because I know I'm going to use it.

To mitsdude,

Huh!  Makes absolute sense.  Here I am looking at high priced items to use my 40% on.  Thank you for the tip.

Toshi, I know you are getting a lot of different ideas and that is what is awesome.  I have tried the Krylon and Rustoleium clears and to me they put down to thick of a coat.  I liked the Testors clear in the small cans, but got a lot of overspray.  I tried my luck at Future and I didnt have as much luck as others have with it.  Now, I only use Future when applying decals and use it as a decal set and sealer.  As for a clear coat, I've found that I really like the Alclad Klear Acrylics.  I've also purchased some of the Testors Acrylic satin and matte finishes for airbrushes.  I personally like the way that they go on in thinner coats.

On the Bench:  Lots of unfinished projects!  Smile

I love Testors Dullcoat if I want a really flat finish.  For a semi-gloss or eggshell finish I tend to go to regular hardware store paints.  I'd like to see more hobby paint lines offer clear semi-gloss.

To jelliott523,

That's great, what I have done is the exact thing that you now recommended.  I have a can of Testors Spray Lacquer Dull Coat #1260.  I also have in my inventory, Model Master Acrylic Gloss Clear #4638, Semi Gloss Clear #4637, Flat Clear #4636.  They all do the job fantastically.

You see, I've only made 11 model kits of aircraft.  So my experience is minimal at best, what I'm trying to convey is the fact that I need to gain experience.  In order for myself to do so, I'm experimenting with different products and of course, most importantly and valuable as well is the recommendation from FSM forum members like yourself.  I highly regard and is very honored that you and others would reply to my questions.  I want to thank you in this regard.

I've been aware of the Alclad products from a forum member at which they highly regard.  That would be my next step after I deplete my inventory of clear products.  Once again, thank you for the read and reply.

To Don Stauffer,

I too agree with your statement in this regard.  I really like and enjoy the use of Testors products including their upscale Master Modeler items.  It's just that in order for me to obtain these items are that I need to drive a half hour plus, where as Walmart is but three minutes away.

But as we all know, if you want to get exceptional results, one must make an effort to do so, hence I can see myself in the very near future, making my little road trips to Hobby Lobby and or Michaels.  Thank you sir for always helping me!

I just finished reading everyone's submissions,  Perhaps there a little dated but the experiences and advice are not.  All of you correspondents:  don't stop.  I find all advice helpful and interesting.
