Not impressed with Hataka
Posted by scottabe on Saturday, July 18, 2015 7:40 PM

I've been using Hataka paints on the past few kits now and I'm not pleased with the performance of the paint spraying from the airbrush. I'm finding it very difficult to get a decent even spray without drying up my needle too quickly or causing a complete mess on my kits. I'm finding it doesn't spray consistently from the airbrush, it's clogging up, it's to heavy or it's doesn't spray at all.....even after thinning it down.

I'm down under in Australia so it's winter here....cold, wet and miserable weather so my spray conditions aren't optimal at the moment. Though my Gunze and Tamiya's paints spray great as normal so I know it's not overall weather conditions alone. My airbrush is clean and spotless, needle is perfect, the PSI @ 20-25.....not sure what else I can try.

As far as the Hataka results(when applied nicely) is a fine product, I just wish it was more reliable. Anyone have these issues as well? I'd like to know if anyone can give me advice on how to fix this problem.

I've never used the brand, but if it's acrylic, you may need a flow agent that will lengthen the drying time.

Having never heard of Hataka, I got curious. Sorry, no first hand experience so feel free to disregard my comments if you prefer to.

Read some far from glowing comments on a couple other sites,  but this reviewer seemed to have no problem with the stuff.

Curious, did you thin it and if so what with?

Never heard of it either. Sorry that I can't be of much help.

Hello!

Hataka is a Polish company. They sell paint sets, boasting careful historical research on the paint shades. They have nice sets for Vietnam era aircraft - one for Navy hi-viz aircraft, another for USAF gray and SEA aircraft, so I bought the sets. So far I only tested brush painting their black paint, and it comes down nice, but I also bought a large bottle of their "Acrylic Thinner for brush and airbrush" as I read it is recommended, and the paints straight from the bottle seem to be on the thick side. That might also help you, Scottabe, to airbrush the paint better - might be worth trying. Hope it helps - good luck with your project and have a nice day

Paweł
