Repainting Tamiya acrylic over model sealed with future.
Posted by Stuart06 on Tuesday, August 4, 2015 10:33 AM
I have a model that I have applied a medium gray color and have sealed it with future so that I can apply the decals and weathering. But on looking at the medium gray color, I don't like it, and want to change it to a light (sea) gray. I will use the Tamiya acrylic paint, but was wondering if I should a apply a flat coat or a primer over the current surface that is very glossy due to the Future coat I used earlier.

Can you give it a light sanding? After that I would reapply primer and then the new basecoat.

This could be risky.  I would quit while you're ahead.

This could be risky, and I'd rather not sand because there is raise rivet detail I don't want to loose.

The scale is 1/72 - Merlin from Revel.

Chuck,

I have to repaint because the decals are the same color as the paint.  So when I apply the tiger decals, you can't see them as they blend in with the color on the model.

I used Tamiya Medium Sea Gray (RAF).   The color of the paint seems much lighter in the bottle, but once it was sprayed and dried, I tried to put the tiger decals on and it turns out they are the same shades.  So they are impossible to see.

Can you strip it? Windex will do it. At least enough to scrub down to a useable base for new paint. Obviously, test and let dry your next color on a scrap. Did the decal survive?

Might be time for a new model.

The clear is likely a thin layer, Windex applied in small amounts repeatedly and with continual change of  cotton pads should have you down to the Tamiya finish quickly. Whether the Windex will attack the Tamiya I don't know. But if you salvage the Tamiya paint, a light wet sanding with fine 1200 grit would set things right.. Experiment first, see if the Tamiys paint will stand up to Windex, if not try some other cleaners, maybe 91% alcohol? Good luck with it.

I might be able to strip it using Windex in a spray bottle.  I believe Windex will thin out Future (as I use Windex to clean my airbrush when I spray Windex).

The decals are not on it, but the windows are in place and since this is a closed model, if any window pops out, I cannot put it back in since I would have to go from the inside.

The Windex will take the Future off. It will also take the Tmaiya paint off. Not completely, but it will remove it some. You can spray right over the Future. The only problem you're going to have is that the paint and Future and more paint on the model (especially in 1/72) will become too thick. Alcohol will also remove the Future and the underlying paint even more completely than Windex.

Soak the model with IPA and Future will come off with no residue whatsoever.
