Question about painted panel lines
Posted by Resident Eric on Wednesday, August 5, 2015 9:33 PM

What can be done if the paint was sprayed on too heavy and covered up a lot of the panel lines? I don't want to re-paint every piece. I'm thinking about scribing with a thin blade to remove some of the paint before I do an enamel wash.

Eric, I believe that Paul Budzik uses that technique as well.  You can find a tutorial about it at his website:

Good luck, Gary

I also rescribe lines if I have to.  It takes a super sharp knife- I now use a scalpel for this.  And, a good, flexible small straightedge.

A sewing needle chucked-up in a pin vise is what I use. It may leave ridges or "burrs" along the edges of each line, but a light buff-over with #0000 steel wool smooths everything out.

If the kit has DEEP engraved panel lines, sometimes it's a good thing that they get somewhat filled-in with paint.
