Best Oils for Flesh Washs?
Posted by gjw on Sunday, August 16, 2015 9:45 PM

I was just wondering about which oil paints work best for washs on flesh. I have tried acrylics and the look wash always hard to achieve. Any help would be appreciated greatly. Thankyou!

Not sure exactly what you are doing but this may help. If an artist were painting 'flesh' they can mix most any shade except African American from burnt sienna and raw sienna adding white for the desired shade and then add a brownish red like red oxide for the desired 'redness' of the skin.

When I started to do figures, I was using one of Shep Paines book for guidance and he recommended to use the best (read expensive) oil paints available to you.  Ever since, I've used Windsor and Newton paints and brushes when I use oil paints.  Downside is the cost of the oils and the brushes you need, upside is the fact that with care, both last a long time.
