oil based paints compatibility with acrylics
Posted by David Drake on Wednesday, August 26, 2015 1:46 PM

I am working on a wargamming project. I have base coated with rattlecan rust-oleum brand "rusty metal primer" (which is actually the primers color, not the application), and have a quart of the matching oil based "high performance metal primer" paint. I will be doing the detail painting using Vallejo game color line acrylic paints. I plan to use the oil based paint for touch up and in my airbrush.

So, I have a few questions about this plan.

Will I have a bad reaction between these paints, specifically oil going down over acrylic? Is there any drying time issues? There will be small clean up applications not heavy coverage.

What's the recommended thinning and pressure instructions for this kind of oil paint for airbrushing?

Can oil based paints be safely stored in a plastic 'eyedropper' style bottle and should I do anything special?

And I am trying to avoid decanting the rattlecan paint if possible.

Thank you for any advice or knowledge you can share!
