I have tried hand brushing Tamiya acrylics and the results did not go well, even when thinning it with the Tamiya thinner.
I get better results hand brushing with Vallejo.
Too many models to build, not enough time in a lifetime!!

Oops... sorry I forgot to mention about the retarder stuff already being in the Tamiya thinner... I knew that I missed something...
Never new that [ about Tamiya thinner ]. Thanks for adding on to stikpushers reply.Like you, I bought retarder many years ago, never using it, when I was new to airbrushing.Turned out it was lack of experience that even retarder wouldn't have helped.Once I'm done moving & have my gear all unpacked,I'll go back to spraying. But I'm kinda psyched to see if I can pull this old school hand brushing off in a decent manner. I view it as yet another learning experience that will translate into better figure painting as well. Thanks, keith r.
The Tamiya thinner already contains a retarder. But you can add more retarder to completely remove brush strokes. I'm not sure if a regular acrylic retarder will work for Tamiya which is alcohol-based. Tamiya sells its own acrylic retarder. I have two bottles of Tamiya retarder and haven't even opened them.

Thanks, stikpusher.I needed a jumping off point [ no pun intended ! ]. Especially with the ratios. At worst, a little weathering should help, too. keith r.
Yes, using a retarder, or better yet Tamiya thinner will help immensely for hand brushing. It is gonna be trial and error to get a mix ratio, but a start point of around 1 part thinner to 4 or 5 parts paint should work. After that, just imagine yourself as a small scale tanker camo painting the vehicle with a brush, broom, I or whatever is available to do the job. Perfection is not the point- concealment is.
After a 2 year plus sabatical due to caring for an elderly parent & preparing for relocation,I can finally get back to building.Near all my stuff is packed away & I hadda build something.I'm doing a Panther In a 3 color scheme & don't have use of my airbrushing equip. So I'm gonna attempt to the Red brown & Dk.green By hand. The new forum no longer has a search feature That I can find,as I'm sure it's been asked before. So I appolgize for the redundency.I laid down Base w/ a rattle can of Tamiya Dk.yellow & am using Tamiya acryl's for the other 2 colors. Is there merit in using retarder to slow & help level any brush strokes ? Also,I'm guessing thinning would help also.If the retarder is a good idea, how much in proposion to paint & thinner ? I'd thank & appreciate any tips. keith r.
