Does this look like a good water-base? Need help.

Hey all. Being new to the ship modelling game and all I'm wondering if this looks good enough to be construed as water. It's the vacuform base that comes with the Trumpeter 700th carriers painted with Cobalt Blue hue. I've never painted water before and I'm not sure how it came out. Just a note, I haven't painted on the whitecaps yet. I'll get to that as soon as I find out whether or not I should repaint it with a hint of gray or keep it.

Thanks for the help.

Also, if I should repaint it, should I stick to Cobalt Blue mixed with some concrete gray color? Or should I mix it with a different color? Or should I just get aa completely different color blue all together? If the latter, what color blue would you recommend? I've looked at metallic Cobalt Blue and Ultramarine Blue even but I didn't buy them

Hello!

I'd say it has potential, but the colour is just too blue. I'd go more in the direction of green/gray. Good luck with your build and have a nice day

The base color you use is largely dependent on what kind of lighting conditions you wish to portray. The cobalt blue might work well for a sunlit mid-day in the Pacific, less well for an overcast or stormy day in the North Atlantic. (The surface of water is basically a big reflector of sorts, simply put.)

That said, your base color in and of itself is less important than the variations of color seen in nature. Google "ocean water" images and you'll see what I mean. It's all in the shadows and highlights, wave patterns, even spray (if present). It'll take a bit of practice, but you'll get there.

Good luck, and have fun!

Ok. I tried to mix up some blue/green/gray but I'm not having any luck with it. Is there a color you would suggest? Like I said, I'm just starting out at this. Plus I painted the blue onto the inside of the base instead of the outside. Which I'll change to the outside if I must... I really need more help with this as I have no idea where to go. I want to do this as though it's deep water in the mid Pacific. Clear day.

Having painted the inside of the base will work for you. Mix up a thin wash or glaze of the cobalt blue with a touch of dark green, and apply that over the top surface so it settles down into the recesses. That shouild give a little depth. When that's dry, I'd start drybrushing the higher areas with a lightened mix of the same color. (Several rounds of this, with increasingly lighter color on the higher areas, will look better, depending on how involved you want to get.) Finally do white or off-white for the wake areas.

This is the technique I used for the molded ocean base on my Ryan floatplane I recently posted here [the link won't take--here's the URL: http://cs.finescale.com/fsm/modeling_subjects/f/2/p/165583/1817844.aspx#1817844] (although I started with a greener base color). It seems to work pretty well.
