Humbrol matt clear problem.
Posted by Snibs on Tuesday, October 20, 2015 2:55 AM

Hi all.

I have used Humbrol gloss clear for some time now and I love the stuff so when the matt version was released I bought a bottle from ebay Germany as there's no sign of it in Australia yet and he was the only one selling it, anyway it arrives and it's milky white and appears to settle when sitting and about 1 inch at the top of the bottle becomes clear, contacted the seller who tells me his whole stock is like it so it must be normal....ok, shook it stirred it and tested it on Humbrol enamel, looks like how it does in the bottle, it's not the varnish humidity problem, conditions are great for varnish painting, 25 and stuff all humidity, blue skies and not rained for weeks.

Anyone else had this problem? photos on the net suggest the product is clear in the bottle, Humbrol wont answer emails as normal.

Thanks for reading.

sounds about normal for mat varnishes and/or humbrol...  they have a tendency to settle.

try using a power tool to very very thouroughly stir it, then spray something as a test

I let it settle until the top was like water and tested it, same result, I did give it a good stir before the first test but will try again with the dremel tool and see if 35000 rpm stirs it up but I feel it wont change a thing. Humbrol has not responded to emails but no suprise there.

Thanks Jon_a_its for the reply.

I use their Matt and Satin clear coats out of the tin and have had excellent results with both. I stir them thoroughly by hand before thinning them and applying with my airbrush. Like any other paint, yes they do separate and settle when sitting un used. Sometimes they can take a quite a lot of stirring to be properly mixed again between the carrier and the satin or matt coat agent.

Maybe it's fake Humbrol.
