Colourcoats Enamel
Posted by JayW on Monday, December 7, 2015 5:50 PM

Hello All,

I was looking over a colour chart for one of the models in my stash and noticed its call outs where colourcoats, which to my knowledgem, are all enamels. I'm new to airbrushing and up to this point, have only used Tamiya Acrylics. What should i know before purchasing any of these enamels, or if in fact, i shouildnt.

Enamels are very effective to use, they can be thinned with regular mineral spirits or any enamel thinner. There are less issues with the tip drying out and give good coverage. The main problem they present are fumes whose effect is culmitive. If you spray correctly there shouldn't be much overspray, but if you can't get good ventilation, get a good respirator at Home Depot.

But I use them and could recommend them.

I use Colourcoats for both ships and RAF fighters. They are very good paints. I thin them with lacquer thinner, half paint and half thinner, and they spray very well through an airbrush.

I mainly use enamels and love them. As with all paints, a respirator should be worn when spraying, enamels more so. They can be rather smelly so if possible paint away from other people. Colour coats used to be sold by White Ensign, and I used some of those and really liked them. Since WEM went out of business the paint range has now been taken over by a company based in Scotland.

Check, have you tried the new ones yet or are yours the WEM paints. The guys who runs sovereign hobbies is on Britmodeller and has been asking for reviews and trying to see what people want in their paint.

I also love enamels, but would caution you not to just use any paint thinner.  There is some synthetic stuff being sold these days in hardware stores that is just crap.  If you go with hardware store stuff rather than hobby shop thinner, hold out for something that specifically says mineral spirits or turpentine.

The synthetic stuff I am talking about is not clear, it is cloudy and has undissolved solids in it, but it is sold in opaque bottles so you cannot see it till you buy it and open it.  That is why you want real mineral spirits.
