Alclad 2 Question
Posted by ck81144 on Tuesday, February 2, 2016 10:22 PM

This may have been asked already but I have a question about alclad 2 chrome paint.  I tried it for the first time the other day painting a bumper for a car.  I used the alclad gloss black as the base coat per the directions.  The chrome finish came out very nice but it was a little dark, probably due to the black base coat.  What I wonder is could you use gloss white for the base coat?  Would that make the chrome finish brighter?  Has anyone tried this or maybe a different gloss color?

Alclad chrome and polished aluminum are both very sensitive to the thickness of the coat. If put on too thin it will be too dark, if to thick it will look dull.  You need an airbrush with good control, and some practice to get the right thickness.

I have used Alclad over different gloss colors to represent different alloys. It dulls the finish slightly, but can give it a nice color tint.  I have used it over yellow, gold, blue, and white.  The white definitely dulls it down a lot, but that is fine if you want to simulate a duller alloy of aluminum, as on aircraft wings.

Hello Chris

sounds like you need to do a second light cost of chrome, I often do two or three very light costs and build up the chrome. Here a few bits I did recently

Don, I have an alclad project coming up. What kind of paint are you using for the tint and then painted over with the alclac?

I use Testors enamel. It requires the gloss enamel, which takes awhile to dry, and it must be thoroughly dry.  I built a heated drying box to speed up the drying time.
