well i just baught my first airbrush. a Paasche VL double action siphon feed. going to use my work compressor with a low presure reg and water trap. its going to be a little loud but i hope it will work for now. so should i stick to acrylic paints for the easier clean up. or just use both(acrylic or enamel) and deal with the harder clean up? also what thinners are you guys useing?thanks for the help!!

I have a few airbrushes and they serve different purposes. I never run enamels through the guns I shoot accrylics with. I'm not saying it cant be done, I just dont do it and was given this advise years ago by a local artist.

thanks guys! ok so i wrote this last night and posted it and i thought it disappeared. so this morning before work i rewrote this and submitted it and now i have 2 posts of the same...sorry about that!! I'm a new guy to this. ok i have a compressor for my nail guns but the regulator only goes down to 20psi. i was thinking that it was to big to be painting. and I'm sure the hoses are different sizes, I'd have to change that all up too. thanks for the help and sorry about the confusion!!

If you go the air tank route you would raise the pressure a lot, probably to the max the compressor will deliver, or the pressure limit of the tank.  The tank requires a regulator on the output and that is where you adjust the pressure to the AB.

If you want to use the compressor only, no portable air tank, you can put a new, lower pressure regulator in series with the output of the existing regulator.  You would have to boost the pressure of the compressor's regulator a bit, because regulators have a built-in pressure drop when they are working, so the input to your second regulator must be above that pressure.

Your compressor will be fine. I have a 5hp big tank unit for my shop tools and 1:1 tasks, coupled to a low pressure gauge with quick disconnects at the "big hose" end and the AB hose at the outlet. Once you decide on an AB, you can get the right adapters to make it a simple hookup like all of your other air tools.

Best first step in deciding what airbrush you purchase is (IMHO) Don Wheeler's website. He's a retired engineer and has done an incredible amount of work to sort out the operating principles common to all AB's and test many specific models.

Hope this helps you get going!

There are a number of good airbrushes available for under a hundred bucks.  The problem is the compressor.  An alternative is an air tank.  The tank can be pretty cheap- you just need a way to fill it.  If you don't mind a trip to a gas station every so often, just the tank and regulator will surfice.  Another option is a cheap compressor that is noisy and doesn't work that well directly with an airbrush, but can be used to fill the air tank when needed.

I'm looking to buy my first AB system and trying to stay around $100 bucks. I've been surfing a few web sites and the ones in my price range the reviews scare me away and end up looking at the $200-300 price range. I'm looking at the point zero set w/2 brush set with a point zero piston compressor. The two brushes arepoint zero PZ-360 dual action internal mix. the other brush is a PZ-276 single action. the other brand is master air brush and has alot of bad reviews. any help will be appreciated!! ty
