What should my wash look like?

I recently put a wash onto my M3 Stuart made with thinner, some modelmaster flat black and some testors olive drab, I'm just wondering if the wash (while still in the jar) should look see-through, or wether it shouldn't be. When I put in onto the model, it looks like a dark black-blue-green combination.

Depends on what you want the wash to simulate. If you are looking for grime made from oil stains or exhaust it should be more black in color. If you want to show run off from a rusty area it should be more crimson color etc. The color of the wash before application IMHO should look like you just cleaned a brush in it. Like used thinner.
