Painting chromed parts
Posted by Viejo on Tuesday, July 19, 2016 3:29 PM

I've finally gotten around to replacing the car my wife drove when we got married 4 decades ago.  A '68 VW.

I've found the interior and exterior colors so those will be correct, and I've begun the build, but I've encountered a question.

Her car had rims the same color as the body and chromed VW hubcaps that were kind of like baby moon hubcaps.  The model has a one piece wheel and hubcap that is totally chromed.  Question is, can I just mask the center and paint the edge or do I have to remove the chrome plating before painting?

While I know that most modelers do remove the chrome, I and a few of my friends do not.  As long as you use a decent primer, it works fine.

The chrome plating on plastic model parts is actually vapor deposited aluminum, so you want a primer that works well on aluminum.  In the old days zinc chromate primer was the go-to for use with aluminum, but it was found to be carcinogenic and is extremely rare in small bottles or rattle cans.  I have used auto body primers, like duplicolor, with chrome parts and always found it worked fine.
