You need to have a gloss coat for using Alclad chrome. Simple gloss black paint will do as primer when using Alclad chrome.

So has anyone tried doing, say, an Alclad chrome finish using Stynylrez black?

The undercoat to use with Alclad metalizing finishes depends a bit on the particular shade you are using.  The polished aluminum requires a very glossy black.  The plain or airframe aluminum is less critical, and the white aluminum even less so.

But the polished aluminum, which needs to be done with a single, very thin coat, depends greatly on that undercoat, so it must be highly glossy, and absolutely flaw free.  Enamels make for more glossy finishes, and that is why they are so popular under the polished aluminum alclad.

I have used other undercoats with the natural or white aluminum with okay results. In fact, some of use use colored undercoats some time to get a different tint for the Alclad.  Best advise for trying something like that is to experiment on scrap.

Can't see why not. Stay away from Krylon paints!! They're absolute garbage! Ask me how I know. I've had a couple kits ruined by Krylon paint. Never again...

Same for me, I have used the Stynylrez, (geez, what a name,) under Alclad, Tamiya acrylics and MM enamels, no issues at all.

I don't know that its really required, but I let it dry for at least one full day or two, since I do sand lightly before final paint to ensure no dust or anything on the prime coat. That will show up like bear hair, if NMF paints go over it.

Probably the best overall primer I've found, really tough stuff, adheres very well and sands great.

I personally have switched to using Stynylrez as my main primer. I have sprayed Alclad directly over it and have not had any issues. I will typically let it set at least a day to make sure it is fully cured before coating it. I've also used it with AK Xtreme Metal with no problems.

It's lacquer based, as you know. I also have not had any problems when using Tamiya paint thinned with lacquers. The stuff seems to be pretty hearty stuff.

Stynylrez - good idea to use with Alclad paints?

I am working on a Japanese fighter that has an aluminum underside.  I have been using Stynylrez as a primer exclusively for all my recent builds, but in the past when I have used Alclad, I have decanted some Krylon gloss black paint from the spray can to use as a primer for the Alclad.  Given that I don't currently have any Krylon, will the Stynylrez, which is water-based I believe, work well with Alclad?  I also have a bottle of Alclad black primer, but the one time I used it I remember not being terribly impressed with its performance.  Came out sticky, if I remember right.
