Vallejo Question
Posted by TheMongoose on Friday, November 11, 2016 6:22 PM

I want to make sure there are no oils from my hands or anything else on the model before I apply the final clear coat. How do I do this for Vallejo paints? I'm assuming the rubbing alcohol I normally use will not work. How do I do this for Vallejo paints?

The reason I'm asking is I sprayed the matt clear on the bottom of the model to start with and I see some fine pin holes in the clear. I'm thinking the surface needs cleaned before applying the clear. If I'm on the wrong track let me know.

When you say you sprayed the mat on the bottom first, was that after the model had been painted with color, or was the mat layed down as a surface prep?

Did you thin the matt with water?  Could be a water bubble that left a mark.   I'd just spray another coat over the area.

I've never had this problem with acylics, or at least have not noticed.   I never use gloves or prep  with any sort of cleaner either.

I use Vallejo pretty extensively. I never wipe down or clean a kit before painting. i use Vallejo primer and the paint over that. Always a great finish. These oin houle sound stangely like a lacqer or enamel undercoat "gassing out" through an acrylic top coat. Sometimes it causes the orange peel effect. Dirty  or contaminated styrene would need to be very highly contaminated to cause that.

Maybe it is a styrene relaese agent on the kit? I have built a lot and nor encountere that with acrylics properly used.

I'm thinking you're onto something with the offgassing. Maybe i sprayed it too soon. I put everything in the box to drag it back and forth somewhere and when i opened the box i could smelll the paint really strongly. The primer may need more than a day to dry before putting on the top coat. thinking about it more ive also seen this happen on cars when water gets in the line and spits out during painting. Gotta be one of the two. I will pay more attention to prep and see if it repeats or if i get it under control.
