I use the one by Mr Hobby, is not bad, can be a pain to remove, but in some applications is a good option.



I think the one by Scotch tape looks interesting, I might purchase that one to give it a try. I am working on the tricolor skim for summer camouflage on a german tank. The one that uses beige, green, and dark red.

I have even used modeling clay when I was out of poster tack, and had a quick masking job to do.

I use wadded up and wettened tissue for filling cavities that I do not want paint to get into.

Panzer putty also is pretty good but keep it away from PE grills and alike, you will get it off ok but it's time consuming, I tested it while the PE part was on the desk but if was glued in place you may be in trouble, apart from that it's good stuff. Down side is it's expensive compared to Blu-tac, here in Australia anyway.

I have gotten it from Walmart, Staples, even the local grocery store (in the little office supplies section)

When it is new, it's fairly sticky and can leave behind some residue. Most of the residue can be removed easily. I use a ball of the stuff and just roll it over the residue. You will also see a noticable line where you masked...this usually goes away with a clear coat.

 Once the stuff has several uses and the paint has been mixed in with it, it'll be less sticky and won't leave the residue. I have a ball of the stuff (little bigger than a golf ball) that I have been using for years (over 200 builds masked with it) and it is still good. After use, just knead it back into a ball. Before masking with it, it helps to knead it, twist it, pull it. This helps to warm it up a little and soften it, making it easier to work with.

Sounds like your thinking of Silly Putty.

I use white tack, less residue

Silly putty is hard to find in the uk, but Ushi or similar do a black putty with similar properties

Several different paint mfrs inc Vallejo do versions of Humbrol liquid mask as well

Are you thinking of the Blu tack stuff?  I use a generic from Staples/WalMart that is the same thing.
