spraying flat colors
Posted by ardvark002 on Tuesday, May 23, 2017 4:56 PM

Hi, Is it nessary to thin flat or can you shoot straight from the bottle?  I thinned a bottle of testors flat white about 60/40 and it was like spraying tinted thinner. I'm going to get another bottle tomorrow, but would like to see if anyone thins and if so what ratio. I know I could use trial and error, but thought I'd ask. Thanks. Aardvark

Yeah, you gotta thin. You're shooting white, though, which is the real issue. I haven't found a brand that covers in a satisfactory manner. That and yellow is it's ugly twin brother.

I second Mississippi, and add that I think you probably overthinned it, wonder what thinner you used, and would like to comment that though I'm not a frequent user of Tamiya acrylics, their white and yellow sure seems to cover nicely. 2 cents

Edit: I guess i assumed you meant MM Acryl, I might have that all wrong.

Aardvark - More paint info would be useful, enamel or acrylic? Most often my thinning ratio is about 3:2, paint to thinner, sometimes thinning as much as 50%, if that is what is needed. Many variables involved, just gotta do what you gotta do.

For me, any paint needs to be stirred well, as opposed to just shaking the bottle. If the solids that settle to the bottom are not thoroughly stirred and blended, you automatically start out too thin.

I use Tamiya acrylics and MM enamels. I add thinner to begin with, checking the consistency as I go, stop adding when it seems like milk. I've always thought that term is rather vague, I watch how fast the drips fall from the stirring paddle, then check how a drop flows down the side of the bottle.

I always use Stynylrez primer, black, white or gray, depending on the paint color. This applies to either acrylic or enamel.

Hi all, Thanks for your replies, I appreciate. Had a murphy's law day today, not with my builds till paint came into the pic. I have sprayed flat, but mostly with rattle cans or brushed, and top coated with gloss, per earlier post about good results. I regret this post ,as I should have been able to figure this out by myself, I over thinned!, but still would like to know a ratio if thinning. Thanks again, Aardvark Ps. testors or mm enamel

What brand and type are we talking about here?  Acrylic, enamel, or lacquer?  The type and brand of paint can make a real difference.

He's already mentioned it - Testors brand. Didn't say which white paint - Model Master,  the enamel in small square bottles, acrylic, or lacquer....

Yup .... you over thinned it too much. You need to get it to a consistency of skim milk to spray. I know it's kind of hard to figure out but play around until you get the idea.
