Humbrol Acrylic thinning problems
Posted by bstarr3 on Tuesday, July 11, 2017 10:53 AM

I got an airfix dogfight doubles kit as a gift.  It comes with what I believe are Humbrol acrylics (based on the number codes).  I tried thinning it in different ratios with my usual thinner, which is 80/20 distilled water and IPA.  It kept clogging the brush, but when I could get it to spray out, looked thin and uneven on the model.  I figured maybe the thinner I was using was reacting with the paint somehow and making clumps.  Any advice on how to thin humbrol acrylics?

I've never dealt with Humbrol acrylics but I've heard they're a fickle animal. I also heard folks say Humbrol enamels are better than their acrylic line.

I don't use Humbrol paints, but my guess is the alcohol is destabilizing the emulsion. Humbrol recommends thinning with water or thier own acrylic thinners. I always recommend using brand-specific thinner over trying to concoct my own.
