Thinning Model Master clear coats
Posted by Mars on Saturday, July 29, 2017 3:07 PM

I bought Model Master flat and gloss clear online. The ad said it was enamel clear but when I got it it says laquer clear coat. Will Teastors enamel thinner work with this?

Probably not, but regular lacquer thinner should. Test for compatibility, though.

Do you have MM Clear Top Coat 2736? If so its clear enamel.

[/quote  By regular laquer thinner, I assume it's what I can get at a hardware store?

No it's gloss clear and flat clear laquer, r71191 and t61121, respectively.

Then use LT from Home Depot. That's what I use.

I also use MM clear flat....thinned about 50/50 with store brand lacquer thinner.

Istead of stending the money on their gloss...I bought a quart of Minwax clear gloss lacquer (again, thinned 50/50). The whole quart cost about the same as 2 MM bottles...I've done around 200 builds and have just passed the 1/2 way mark on that quart!

I just got done dullcoating a plane with the Testors dullcoat lacquer in bottle. I used lacquer thinner at 1:1, the same ratio I use with Testors enamel and enamel thinner.  Worked fine.
