Coverage problem using Tamiya or Model Light colored acryilics over darker colors
Posted by John54 on Sunday, September 17, 2017 1:31 PM

I'm working on a Ch-47 Army helicopter model that is painted with MR 304 olive drab.  The problem I'm having has to do with trying to add yellow or orange areas over the OD.  I can't get the lighter colors to cover the OD without the darker color showing through.  I've tried both brusing and airbrushing the lighter colors without success.  What am I doing wrong, and what can I do to fix this problem?  Will using a primer help?

Thanks,

John

Hi, John -

I think yellow is about the most difficult color to work with, orange right behind. First, I believe most of the experienced modelers here will agree, paint the lighter color first, then apply the darker colors.

Yellow works better when applied over white, or even a very light gray. And a primer I think is always a good idea. So, if you're going to be spraying yellow, after you have the area masked you could spray a light coat of white, then follow with the yellow or orange.

Thanx Patrick,

I've got you by 9 years.  Turned 81 in July.  I served as an H-34 crew chief at Ft. Benning, GA, 1955-57 and have been modeling only a few years after a hiatus of close to 70 years.   As a 12-14 year old I made Strombecker wooden models of wwII bombers and fighters. Just got my first airbrush, a Badger Patriot 105 Xtreme and am feeling my way with it.

I figured that I should have used a primer when the yellow didn't cover over the OD and am going to try Badger's STYNYLREZ.  They have a yellow version.

I appreciate your very quick response to my query.

Be well,

John

Always paint light colors first, then follow with the darker colors.
