The horsepower is not really a consideration if you are using it for modeling only.
Any compressor that will deliver 20-30 psi or more should suit you just fine.

The only compressors that pulsate are the diaphragm models such as the Paasche D-500 and others like it.

If you are just spraying single colors on something like cars then it is not absolutely necessary unless you are using a compressor that delivers more than 40 psi or so.
You must get one if you want to be able to control the air for fine detail spraying.
