Acrylic weathering over enamel paint/varnish?
Posted by Alte Hase on Monday, December 18, 2017 10:07 AM

Hi everyone.

I've never done much weathering before, and I paint with humbrol enamels and seal with humbrol matt enamel varnish. My question is, can I use enamel based weathering products over the enamel varnish, or must I use acrylic based weathering products?

I've read very conflicting advice about this, mainly that enamel-over- enamel results in adverse chemical interaction but I've also read that acrylic-over-enamel can result in cracking or peeling?

Please help! Thank you!

No you can't, the solvents in the enamel weathering products will attack the enamellayer underneath. You can either use acrylic weathering products, or use a none solvent based clear coat. A lot of people use future.

I am a Norfolk man and i glory in being so

Thanks guys. I live in South Africa and there isn't the range of products here like in Europe or the US, i guess the safest then would be to get acrylic-based weathering products to apply after painting/matt coating as I usually do using enamel based products (AK and Mig are available here)...

I do a lot of my weathering with my airbrush, using enamels over enamel, and there is no problem with that.

For drybrushing and other non-airbrush stuff, I again often use enamel stuff.  But I usually clearcoat my models with either Glosscoat or Dullcoat (Testors spray cans) first, which is a lacquer.  Never had any problems with the weathering over that.

You can do what you are looking to do, just be light on the application and light on the pressure.

So I could use enamel-based weathering products over enamel paint/varnish?

I'm super confused now
