acrylic versus enamel
Posted by ardvark002 on Wednesday, December 27, 2017 5:19 PM

Hi all, I use MM enamel almost always. I'm going to do a grumman gulfhawk which is international orange. I used it to paint Glamorous Glennis, but it is no longer available for purchase. This leaves me two possibilties. Mix my own or go to acrylic. I'd be interested in hearing what people think ( pros and cons), of one type of paint over the other. I thought this might be a good oppertunity to try acrylic.  Thanks  Aardvark       Keep on buildin

I think enamel is easier to use shoots easier, less clogs, but many don't want to deal with noxious fumes.Acrylics, except for Tamiya require a learning curve, use of flow improvers, proper thinners, and ratios.

AK is coming out with a line similar to Tamiya, heard good things about it.

Look for alternative enamels if that is your preference (like mine). Testors square bottle enamels are still easily found and their orange is supposed to be a good match for the old Model Master color. Or see if you can find Humbrol, which is a superior paint in my experience to Model Master.

some thoughts from experience. work through the "it has to be exact color" we all go through. different lighting, intensity, etc will always make it look different.Big Smile took me a year to get past that and, with my perfectionism, cut into paint and completion time. i have been using VALLEJO and just started working with their primers. i like the nozzle bottles so i can do color modulaion easily. i have masked it with tape and silly putty with no "pull up" and weather it with oils and powders/pastels sans barrier with no problem. it also brush paints nicely.
