Painting large area 3d printing parts

Hi,
I am new to the modelling world. Recently, I made some 3d printed models and would like to paint them.
- Some parts of the surfaces have tiny dents.
- It is in PLA plastic
1. What is the best way to achieve a smooth paint finish without an airbrush?
2. Do I need a primer or filler?
