Alky Removes Enamel?
Posted by MusicCity on Monday, March 29, 2004 9:47 PM
Here's the scenario ... Saturday I airbrushed some cartridge belts with flat black enamel thinned about 3:1 with mineral spirits. Yesterday I hand brushed some acrylic over part of the flat black, but I didn't like the way it looked. Today (at least 48 hours since I sprayed the enamel) I figured I'd use some 91% isopropyl alcohol to strip the acrylic and airbrush it. I expected the alky to strip the acrylic and leave the enamel, but to my surprise it took off the enamel as well.

The parts were well cleaned before I sprayed them Saturday, and should have been well cured by today. Not a big deal, I just sprayed them again, but I don't understand why alcohol would dissolve enamel paint. Is that normal?
