is okay to add this to the bottle to thin the paint or not? Twice I’ve added some of this thinner to tamiya acrylic paint to thin them some and it seems it actually makes it thicker almost gooey. Tks much.
Keep on modeling!
All the best,
William
X20A should be fine for Tamiya acrylics.
Is it possible that you may have X20 (without the "A") enamel thinner? This is mostly mineral spirits and could have this effect when mixed with acrylic paint.
well, the bottle says X20A and i bought it from a reputable shop. Dunno. Its just kinda wierd I think. When added, it makes the paint gooey. And im not adding a large percentage either.
Are you using paint that' been sitting around for along time and went bad. I've been using x20a thinner with tamiya acrylics for 2yrs never had what your talking about happen.

nope - all pretty new paint w/in the past 2 years
Take a sniff of the product (x20-a)..it should smell like soapy iso alcohol. .if it smells like turpentine its x20. I have tamyia paint thats more than four years old and there still good to this day ...i think its a bad bach or miss labeled thinner- paint.....only way to find out is to go and buy new thinner and paint of the same and try again and see if it does it again
I agree with the others. No way X20A can do that to Tamiya acrylics. What color is the cap? The alcohol-based thinner has a white cap. The lacquer-based thinner has a yellow cap. Next, smell the thinner. If it has a strong petroleum-like smell, it's actually their lacquer thinner. If it smells like weak rubbing alcohol, it's X20A. Otherwise, you're dealing with really old paint, IMHO, which should already look strange before you add the thinner. Barrett
its a white cap and smells a little like watered down rubbing alcohol. im guessing its old paint - maybe as stated earlier, it was sitting on the shelf for a bit as i have only been back at this for about 2 years now and i dont think 2 years makes for old??? who knows.... i may have mucked it up too.... unrelated, but still an oops, i found myself yesterday thinning my brush with enamel thinner while paing with acrylics.
tks!!
2 years is not old for Tamiya acrylics. I have some which are 25+ years old which still work just fine.
