I use Tamiya enamels (yes, enamels.  I buy them on Ebay and so far have never had a problem receiving them).  They brush paint wonderfully.  I usually use Tamiya spray for the basecoat, and then Tamiya enamel for the smaller parts/details.

I guess the only drawback is the lack of colour selection (around 80), but for my needs it's fine.

I mainly use acrylics but not tied down to just Tamiya brands. Tamiya is good but not my go-to paint due to the limited color range. I also use Model Master, Aeromaster, Pollyscale/Floquil Railroad colors and Mission Model acrylics. Mission Model acrylics are getting a lot of looks due to ease of airbrushing and clean up. Just recently, they just expanded their color lines. No doubt they're getting a much wider color range than Tamiya.

Now to answer your question, it really doesn't make a difference what you use for detailing. I use both acrylics and enamels. My go-to clearcoat is Rustoleum or Testors clearcoat in a rattle can.

What type of paint do you use to paint details

Hi All,

Just back into the hobby after many decades away.  I have recently purchased an airbrush / compressor and really like the results.  I have mainly used / practiced with Tamiya acrylic paints because of the easy of clean up, lack of hazardous fumes, and availability locally.  I have tried using Model Master enamel and l like the results but hate the fumes and clean up.  I have not mastered the technique of handbrushing Tamiya acrylic and usually resort back to handbrushing MM. From what I have read, brushpainting Tamiya acrylic is difficult.

My question is - What types / brands of paint do you guys use to handbrush fine details either on the sprue or on a subassembly after being airbrushed with acrylic?  Can I spray with acrylic paints (Tamiya, MIG, Vallajo) and then paint details in enamel (MM)?  If I can do that, what type of varnish do you use to seal before weathering?

Looking forward to your responses.

Todd
