After applying decals...
Posted by MrDave on Friday, March 30, 2018 3:48 PM

OK. Another newbie question.  I am building Italleria's 1/48th F22 for my grandson.  After stripping my first attempt at camo paint all the way back to bare plastic.  Re-primed, base coat re-painted, wheel and weapon wells masked and re-painted.  I used a brush to apply Alclad clear gloss because I couldn't get it to airbrush to my liking.

I have applied the decals to the vertical stabilizers.  Now I brushed on Alclad matte as my dull coat. Not real pleased with the first coat.  Looks like a satin finish.

What I want is to try to get the dull coat to get back to the finish of the final paint finish: Vallejo Air.

Suggestions/ideas??  Really should post some pics, I guess.

Thanks.

Though brushing is probably fine, Alclad is really designed to be airbrushed. (having said that, just past couple days I brushed on some Alclad gloss, the solvent-based stuff, on some detail areas.....it worked great!

Anyway, re the satin finish where you really want matte/flat, please say exactly which Alclad product your are brushing on to try to get a matte finish, Dave. Let us know and we can all get this figured out  together.

The obvious advice is airbrush it, you will get a dead flat finish if you are using the correct Alclad and you spray per Alclad's directions.

Thanks Greg.  I neglected to specify that I bought Klear Kote Matte  ALC-313.

Thanks.

Alclad is mainly used for airbrushing, not handbrushing. Just saying...

I appreciate all of your input.  This newbie has a lot to learn.  I think I may have finally mastered airbrushing Alclad.  At least the matte finish has worked out nicely...especially after following directions.  I also changed out my detail needle to a medium and cleaned the brush thoroughly.

I also found ut that there is a Alclad flat, duh.  I think I was expecting the matte to look like the flat.  I have ordered the flat finish so I will see.

Thanks again.  You all have been a big help.

Thanks.

Looks like you are on track, now, Dave. Good.

Yes, I was going to mention that the flattest flat Alclad has is #314 Flat which is flatter than the #313 Matte you have. Alclads product names can be confusing.

And definitely following spraying directions on the bottle. I never thought to mention needle size. You are exactly right.

Happy spraying!
