I actually took a class on copper oxidation, in regards to roofs.

If the plaque is copper, after 15 years it would probably be dark dark gray.

If the plaque is bronze, it would probably be still a dark bronze color, but with a black cast to it.

It's usual to paint, wax or otherwise protect plaques.

 Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

Is the plaque really copper, or is it bronze?  They do weather differently.  And they look different when new.

Hi;

 Now for spmething like that it depends . If the plaque is old and the copper has turned blackish from acid rain then do this . Paint the base with a thinned mixture of Anthracite and copper then clear flat coat it .

  Come back with a wash of soot black and clear semi-gloss . That should work for the base Or you can do black ( Alclad ) as your base and do a copper wash and clear semi - gloss overcoat .

 Don posted after me , but he is right too .

Painting a War Memorial

I am painting a grey stone war memorial with etchings that will be 15 years old in a diorama. The memorial has a copper name plaque.  I use acrylic paints (Tamiya, Vallejo) but have Mig Washes and Game Color Washes.  I have lightly sprayed with  Tamiya light grey primer.

What color do you recommend for a base color and the copper plaque?  What  type of wash and color do you recommend to weather the memorial AND bring out the etching work?

Any input will be appreciated!

Thank you,

Leddy
