Colors That Are Transparent That Aren't Supposed To Be

Though I mostly only paint by brush, I've often had problems with Yellow and some Whites but recently I've also had some issues with Red as well.

The other day, I was spraying some Insignia Red by Mission Models and I swear to goodness I had to put about 20 coats of paint down to get a nice deep color out of it.  What are some other problem children colors(I know that yellows and whites can be troubling at times) that I should look out for and is there anyway to defeat the transparency?

 

Did you mix and stir thoroughly? Mission Model Insignia Red shouldn’t come out transparent.

What the base color is really matters. Try whenever possible to paint primary colors over white.

I coulda sworn I stirred, then shook, but I may have missed the stirring.  I'll just get a new bottle and be sure to stir it thoroughly, prior to shaking.

Also, I was painting over black.  Could possibly have also contributed.

The black was the problem. You can't expect red, yellow, nlue or white over red to look right. You need to mask off and paint white as the undercoat for the color to look bright.

I had the same problem with Mission Models red a couple months back. Since, I have sprayed a couple other MM colors and they went down great.

After reading your post, I'm starting to wonder if they turned out a bad batch of red? In fairness, I haven't tried to spray red again just to see if I did something stupid, and I might have.

I always try to see if it was user error first, before I blame an inanimate tool or paint, 99% of the time it ends up being my faint.
