I use Testor's DullCote, too, straight from the rattle-can. I haven't had any issues with it yet.

Don Stauffer Is that just a rename of the lacquer Dullcoat, I wonder?
Don, I believe it is, it seems to be extactly the same as the Dullcoat.

I too thought matte and flat are the same. I wonder if the confusion comes in with some manufacturer's nomenclature.
Alclad comes to mind, whose "flat" is flatter than their "matte". I love their paints but not so much some of their product names and website which is a mish mash of confusion and mis-information.
Back to the original question, my preference is Alclad traditional solvent-based for all clear coats, especially flat.
I try to avoid acrylic flat clear, just haven't found one I really like, and the regular Alclad can go over anything as long as it is cured.
BlackSheepTwoOneFour Bish I am now useing the Alaclads. I use the matt rather than the flat coat. Isn’t matt clearcoat same as flat or is it much more dull in sheen? I’ve always thought they’re both the same.

I always thought they were one and the same and i think in the past different companies have used different terms. But Alclad sell both, i have not used the flat but from what people like Tony have said an reviews i have read it is flatter than the matt which does have a very slight sheen to it.
Not including the Aqua, they have 5 different clear coats. Not being happy with just a semi matt, they also have a light sheen.

Now that Black Sheep stated the obvious I’ll give you a more helpful answer. I use either Tamiya XF-86 or Windsor and Newton satin Varnish. Both are easy to airbrush and don’t ruin the underlying paint.
Clear Flat Coat paint......
