Thinner for Testors Acryl Paints?
Posted by MonsterZero on Monday, April 5, 2004 10:27 PM
I don't remember seeing any dedicated thinner for these acrylic paints by Testors/Model Master. The only Testors thinner I have ever seen is the big square cans of mineral spirits for their enamels.

What's good for thinning the Acryl series? I looked at the selection and thought it might be worth trying. 70% isopropyl alcohal from Wal-Mart?

I just shot some of the Gunship Gray Acryl a while ago and it produced a smoother finish than the MM enamels that I usually use. I was really impressed.
I mix 50/50 water and isopropyl alcohol for my thinner and then mix that with the Acryl in a 2:1 ratio of paint to thinner. I sprayed it at 30 psi and it flowed nice.

What I have found though is that my acrylic airbrush cleaner I have mentioned before does not clean the Acryl paints from the walls of the airbrush color cup.
I have to use lacquer thinner to get it out. I don't know what Testors adds to this paint to make it adhere like it does but it sticks like glue. Big Smile [:D]

Testors has a thinner for Acryl that comes in a squeeze bottle. Alchohol is fine, but might dry a little too fast. Distilled water is good too. Tamiya thinner is expensive.

Acryl may sticks like glue to the color cup, but it doesn't stick to plastic well. Of all the acrylic paints I use, it has the poorest adhesion to plastic.

Testors does make a thinner. It's actually under the MM brand name, and comes in a squeeze bottle. You can use that, distilled water, a mix of distilled water and alcohol (Thanks Mike), or if you wish, you could use Tamiya thinner, which works fine as well.

Not in my experience. I wipe the surface with Poly S Plastic Prep and air dry it and then paint. The adhesion has been excellent, at least for the colors I have tried.
I sprayed some of the Gunship Gray on an old model wing and let it dry for 48 hours and was able to stick duct tape to the same spot three times before any paint lifted.
I would call that excellent adhesion.

Testor makes Acryl Thinner #50496 in a118ml squeeze bottle and Acryl Cleaner #50497 also in a 118ml squeeze bottle for cleanup and cleaning airbrushes. I paid 4 bucks for each bottle.
