Hello Everyone,

Hope you guys are doing great. This is my first time on this forum. Hello from Toronto Canada.

I have a question about Tamiya paints. The thing is, i hardly use these paints but i do not want them drying out!!!!

WOULD it be a good idea to put in 10-15 drops of x20A (tamiya thinner acrylic) to ensure longer hydration / increase its lifespan?

Please let me know, my local hobbyshops don't have a clue about this.

I want to extend the life of my paints outside of just ensuring the lids are clean and there no clogging.

I guess what I am trying to get at is, is there ANY drawback in adding extra tamiya thinner to my tamiya jars just for that extra hydration / peace of mind

Thank You

I was in our local shop today and their Tamiya rack was pretty bare. The clerk said there was a Tamiya paint shortage due to it not making it into the country. Before I could get anything else out of him, he had to go help another customer.

Unfortunately we don't all have a local hobby shop nearby. My closest is 70 plus miles away like GM, but that does lend itself to staying well stocked on supplies. If I have a bottle of paint get below half full I am usually ordering another. That's what I was doing when I saw the shortage notice.

Ill bet that has more to do with Internet Hobbies not complying with Tamiya’s pricing policies, than with any general product shortage. Tamiya specifically said last year that they would cut off providing products to any business that did not follow their pricing rules.

There are plenty of other online hobby retailers out there.

I wonder if the longshoremen are doing another job action slowdown before conttact negotiations... last week I did notice a LOT of ships outside the breakwater... more than the usual number... (the LRP in me dies hard for seeing and  counting things)

My LHS in Eugene, Oregon, was for a long time well stocked with Tamiya acrylics, now there are many empty slots. Especially the more common colors, black, white, grays and browns.

The resident manager says they have standing orders in place for getting stock in, but it's just being transported out of California. I took that to mean the stock is there, but not deliverable.

I ordered from Scale Hobbyist and it's on the way, but I'm old school and much prefer to support my local shop. I feel it's really important to have a local shop, so I can just start my pickup and in 10 minutes I'm there. I also depend on them for building supplies, contest grade balsa, tools, etc.

Maybe someone will drop in with a definitive answer as to what's happening.

Not even a chain store, RC, or railroad hobby store by you GM? That sucks.

The locations we are looking at in AZ has a couple shops within a 30 minute driving radius.  And an IPMS Chapter. I made sure to check on that.

The nearest LHS still standing is about 70 miles away. I really depend on scalehobbyist.com. They are great.

When you are out there in Tombstone you are going to rely on that UPS truck. Or is it still Pony Express?

I've noticed the Tamiya racks at my usual hobby shops in Montana and Maryland have been pretty bare lately. Barrett

I love it here in Indiana..........

By golly Clint, I applaud your loyalty to our home state. I like it too, except for the weather in the winter and the potholes.

Yes

I guess Stik is right, this is pretty off-topic. Embarrassed

They mostly seem to be in stock at the tamiyaUSA site. A few of the more popular military colors and clears are sold out at the moment though, but you can request to be notified when they're back in stock. I'm not sure it's a shortage, I think some colors are just particularly popular across multiple genres. TamiyaUSA is based in california as well, and their news page is up to date but they haven't mentioned a shortage yet.

Well, not to derail this thread any further, has anybody noticed an actual shortage of Tamiya paints at any physical stores where they normally buy them? I haven’t seen it here. The inventory racks are well stocked locally.

Hearing about all the crazy things going on out in California, Washington state and New York it lets me know how lucky I am to live in the great state of Indiana

That has got to be the funniest thing I have read, or will read, this month. Toast

Edit: I think if you are serious or if you are tongue-in-cheek it's ok for me either way to consider it very funny, right?

I love it here in Indiana, we do have that one mayor from I think south bend? That's been on tv alot here lately. If that's what your think is funny I agree, but if you ignore him and a few others it's a great place. It doesn't have the beauty of back home in Tennessee but all the great hardworking people make up for it.

I‘ll pass. New York State is no better. Our nutty guy is talk8ng about legalizing pot. I get sick on the fumes from marijuana. I’m all for medicinal pot, but not recreational pot.

He also put a ban on plastic bags in supermarkets and stores. Now you have a choice - paper or plastic. If you want plastic, prepare to pay a 5 cents fee for EACH plastic bag. Geez, we’re getting taxed to death even more.

So, I feel your pain Carlos.Cool...

[/quote]

Medicinal marijuana is a slippery slope. we had that for a dozen or so years before recreational marijuana was legalized by popular vote. (I still would like to know how state law can override a federal law in the legality of an item) Medicinal Weed was legalized for specific situations- cancer, glacoma, etc. Imget it and wont fight that- especially for the appetite aspect of folks undergoing chemo. Whatever works, use it. But..... Within a short time period, scripts were being written for every generic complaint under the sun and moon. And now with recreational marijuana legalized, one can walk down the street smoking a joint perfectly legally, yet go to jail for doing the same thing drinking a beer. When I do my bike rides, I constantly smell it coming from passing cars, or from parked cars where users are “hot boxing”. Yet laws for enforcement, or technology for court conviction have not kept up. I’m sorry folks, both alcohol and marijuana alter the body’s senses affect one’s ability to drive. But hey, it’s not like more people are killed annually every year by traffic collisions, than by firearms...

We have that plastic bag tomfoolery here too. And now one must ask for a straw with your beverage (alcholoholic beverages excluded) in a restaurant. In the grand scheme of things these are first world problems. Annoying, but not really big deals.

But lets go to California‘s changes to criminal law. It’s catch and release now because so many felonies have been downgraded to misdemeanors. Repeat offenders can keep on offending. Can’t keep ‘em in jail or prison. Well, I can see the writing on the wall of heading back to the crime rates of the 70’s and 80’s that caused “three strikes“ to be introduced.

So to my once formerly beloved Golden State I will be saying “so long, farewell, auf wiedersehen, good bye... I bid adieu, to you, and you, and you!”. I’ll stop at the bridge over the Colorado River in Blythe, take off my watch, throw it on the ground and head elsewhere... cue up Steppenwolf (just kidding about the watch part)

BTW, this was not a rant, merely a point by point call out of some of the things degrading the quality of life for the average law abiding citizen of the state.

Hmmm...not sure about that one stopping other folks around the country from having them in stock. After all the lunatic's that run the state of California ban a lot of things the rest of us are still able to get.

The State of california is not run by lunatics. I live in the State and I'm very proud of the quality of life here. Yes, it's very expensive, but it is a very successful State.

The reason that Internet Hobbies has stopped selling Tamiya paint is posted on their website. Tamiya has instituted a set-price policy, where retailers cannot discount Tamiya products.

Just went and I think I read what you were talking about. It's a post from May of 2018 and they are not stopping the sale of Tamiya paints they were simply letting folks know about the pricing and that Tamiya products would not get any discounted pricing because of Tamiya's set pricing.  so perhaps the shortage is real. I guess only time will tell.

Oh it’s ok I don’t need to try to convince you of anything. I have the highest respect for you.

On the subject of leaving because the boss is a lunatic, well...

I'm sure your reasons are more like mine would be. Warmer weather, proximity to the offspring, what the XO wants.

I'd hope to visit you in AZ my friend.

I heartily disagree with you about the management of California my friend, that’s why I’m leaving. Something that I never thought that I would do years ago. but we can speak of that via other channels per the rules of this site

Good to know that info. I suppose the banner announcing a shortage was a lie then. Hmmmm... I better second guess doing business with them I suppose. Thanks for the info.
