I use white and black depending on the color I'm painting.

 

 

 

 

 I use white or gray depending on final color.  I keep a couple of grays on hand- one is heavy bodied for when I have to cover scratches or a lot of filler (sometimes called sandable primer).

 

 

 

Forgot to say I also keep red oxide primer on hand.  Many freshwater ships use red oxide below waterline, and in some cases for the whole hull.  Thus the primer becomes the finish coat for hull.

I use a primer which color compliments my base color. For example, on German dark yellow AFVs 1943-1944, I apply Vallejo Ral 7028 Dunkelgelb primer. On WW2 “dark green” Russian tanks, I use Vallejo Russian 4BO primer or even Vallejo Black. I never use black primer under Dunkelgelb or Desert Yellow paint schemes - too stark for me since it darkens my base coat. I make the shadows later in the weathering process with oils.

Its largely down to personal choice. I use black for just about everything now. But some colours, white and yellow ecpecially, can be tricky. For those it helps to have a lighter base. If i want a nice clean white, i use a white primer. If i want a grubby one, grey. But for most colours, black or grey work fine.

Gray is probably the standard,gives a neutral base to work with,Sometimes I use Tamiya white primer when spraying white,really helps with coverage.Black helps with pre shading,their are many other colors for primer,Vallejo provides a lot,they too provide a good basecoat for covering diffrent color plastics
