Polly Scale Acrylic Issue
Posted by 68GT on Friday, July 26, 2019 9:47 PM

So I have no white for the fin flash except for some Poly Scale railroad paint.  Test shooting went well on my skyhawk mule so I masked the Phantom and painted away.  I got cracking on the fin flash but not on my test mule.  Was it the gloss coat on the Phantom?  Did the coats of paint on my mule provide more grip?

I didnt thin it at all but both were shot exactly the same way other than the base.

That can happen if your base coats haven't completely dried before you spray the new top coat. Dissimilar shrinkage rates as everything dries. You want your base coats well dried and done shrinking before your top color coat goes on.

Edit: It can also be caused with adhesion problems. I like to give a light scuff of under clear coats before adding a color top coat over clear, usually with 000 steel wool. For one thing it takes out any little dust nibs but gives the color coat some extra grip too. And of course in order to scuff the clear it has to be completely cured/dry.

It's been over a week though so I would think it was cured.

Its at least 4 or 5 years old but was only used once and I had a similar issue.  The test shots worked fine so maybe its the gloss coat being to smooth.  The test kit only has various types of paint and no gloss coat.
