What do you Think ?

Would it be easier to use FS 16440 Gloss Gull Gray,or to use FS 36440 Flat Gull Gray and then gloss coat it later. Both can be Airbrushed Modelmaster enamels.I know the gloss enamels can be tough,it is for my Tomcat.

The flat paint will cover better as well as dry faster.  The caveat is that you will need to apply the flat paint as smoothly as possible to avoid having to trowel on the gloss coat.

Full size cars used to be painted this way I am told.

I've always done mm 16440 thinned 50/50 with laquer thinner and apply at 18-20lbs.  I'll be doing my f4j for the vietnam build that way.

Thanks,

John

I've always used laquer thinner with mm enamels and isopropyl with tamiya.   I did get the mr color thinner for mr color paints as laquer thinner and alcohol failed me.  I'm considering moving to mr color as enamels and original gunze sangyo are going away so I here.  I haven't tried the mm thinner.

Thanks,

John

I thin Testors enamels with real paint thinner (I find the Testors thinner hard to find except for the tiny bottles).  When I say real thinner I mean I stay away from the synthetic stuff.  The can must say either turpentine or mineral spirits.

The red can universal thinner is an 8 oz can.  Price works to about .93 USD per oz.  (online)

Tamiya's lacquer thinner is also 8 oz and is about .98 USD per oz (on line).

Rustoleum brand automotive lacquer thinner at Home Depot (32 oz/ 1 quart) is 1.09 per oz (on line).

Crown brand lacquer thinner at Lowe's  (128 oz/1 gallon) is 0.09 per oz (on line).

My choice is the Crown brand.  I pour from the gallon can into a smaller can for bench top use.   It is my go to choice for thinning enamels both to hand brush and for spraying   I also use it to cleanup after painting, cleaning both the airbrush and hand brushes.   I have been using this lacquer thinner for years and am quite satisfied with its results and performance.

Testors red can thinner is fine. I've used it for MM enamel forever and never had an issue. It's just a little bit hard to find. I get it at Hobby Lobby with their 40% coupon.
