Black Basing technique question
Posted by PANZER826 on Saturday, February 8, 2020 1:58 PM

I was planning on trying the black basing technique on a Russian Sam- 6 model and was wondering after the black primer is applied do I use a light grey or white paint to do the marbling?  Or do I use the final color that the model is going to be for the marbling?

Thanks

Counter shade with grey, brown, a camouflage yellow, or white, or all in that order.  I have found using the final color lessens the overall effect.  The grey would be primarily to dial back and refine the black basing lines.

Regarding the marbling thing, I have seen a model online where the builder used primary colors as well as white to cover the kit’s surfaces with tiny dots of color.  It looked really awful at first, but when the color coat went on, it looked good.  I guess it’s kind of like doing the same thing with oil paints when dot filtering - the vague color variations suggest detail and depth.

I don't shoot solid black rather I marble it over the grey or white plastic. I also add tans and browns to get some color modulation when the topcoat is sprayed.
