Mixed paint shelf life
Posted by Srpuln10 on Saturday, March 14, 2020 7:43 AM

I'm using tamiya paints and shooting through a airbrush. ive got several models that I'm building to go I'm a diaroma. So my question is how long will the paint stay good once I put the thinner to it? I was just going to mix a 23ml bottle of dark yellow. Just put the thinner in and go. I don't have everything built (models) yet. Just wondering if I should mix as I go or what. Thanks guys

I can't speak for Tamiya but I've mixed MM enamels then gone three months or so till use. Much longer than that and I got some thickening, not a healthy thickening like as if thinner evaporated off. Acrylics ( again not speaking of Tamiya) seem to hold out a little better. None the less, if I don't think I can use my mix up in a few weeks time I mix as I go.

Mixing as you go is the best answer. But, I've had small amounts of Tamiya flats that were thinned with alcohol that I left for several years that when stirred up shot just fine. I don't know if the composition had changed or if they would just fall off a model but they didn't clump, they mixed up like new. They were stored in used Tamiya bottles that sealed tightly. I didn't try masking over them or anything, just put them in the brush and sprayed on a sheet of plastic because I was curious to see what they would do. Some were probably close to 10 years old. They were in the back of a drawer and I had forgotten them. So, I doubt that's what you're planning on and I can't guarantee it but you'll probably be ok.

Thanks. I've got a empty bottle  I'll probably just mix as I go. I was just wondering in case I mixed to much. I don't wanna waste a whole lot. None if I can I don't have a true hobby shop that's local. So everything I get I have to order and I don't like the shipping cost on just a few bottles that I order. I could use that as a excuse to order another model but I don't think the wife will go for that too many times lol. But again tks guys for the info. Still learning about the hobby

Depends on how long each build takes.  I usually finish my projects, using Testors enamel.  However, for paint mixed for longer builds I tend to mix paint for the next build, and clean out the old build.  I think Testors enamel already mixed goes bad faster than most brands.

I sometimes tint colors or mix colors, so it is important to mix each color I use early in the build, with enough to complete the build, and that usually works.

If you are talking about your mix just being adding thinner with a standard color then I'd mix as I go. If you are talking about mixing a color from others in an empty bottle, I do that often. Just did it for Navy WWII Blues for the tricolor camo. I have done it with other colors as well. I use Tamiya also, any paints I have mixed and put in an empty Tamiya bottle that seals well have held up great. Others I mixed in different type bottles are dried up and useless. Good luck.
